Chagford Local History Society aims to research, study and arrange the storage of information and material pertaining to Chagford and the surrounding district; to arrange lectures, field trips and other activities; to raise and apply funds for such purposes as the Committee from time to time may determine.
Subscriptions are £8 single and £15 joint membership. There is an interesting series of lectures during the winter months, on the last Thursday of January, February, March, April and October, in Endecott House, starting at 7.30pm with coffee or tea at 7pm. These lectures are open to the public – Visitors £2. The several field trips, both local and further afield are for members only. We hold a Coffee Morning in August to raise funds for future projects and the AGM in November, followed by Cheese and Wine is always very well attended.
The Society has mounted five house by house, street by street exhibitions in recent years, which are mounted in folders and available to view on request. With text, photographs and illustrations, they have been recorded in the light of present knowledge and we welcome corrections and further information. The society also has a large collection of material available to view on request, including copies of the 1840 Tithe map and Apportionment; the 1841 -1901 Census; Trade Directories; School Log Books from 1863 – 1971; and various photographs. These items have been useful over the years for areas of personal research and school History and Geography projects.
